Tornos News | The Municipality of Chania at the “From Crete to Side” Festival in Turkey

A delegation from the Municipality of Chania will travel to the city of Manavgat, Turkey, from April 24 to 26, following an official invitation from the Municipality of the same name, to participate in the “From Crete to Side” Culture and Taste Festival.

The festival, coordinated by the distinguished chef and writer from Istanbul, Maria Ekmektzioglou, aims to highlight Cretan gastronomy, dances, and customs, bringing to the fore the historical and cultural roots that unite Crete with Asia Minor.

The ancient city of Side will be transformed into an open-air cultural crossroads: performances, exhibitions, musical events, and culinary workshops will compose a dynamic panorama of cultural exchange, highlighting the vibrant identity of Crete.

Of particular interest to the festival is the presence of Turkish-Cretan descendants who currently reside in the Manavgat province and keep alive the cultural memory of Crete, as transmitted by their ancestors after the population exchange in 1923.

The Municipality of Chania will be represented by Deputy Mayors Eleni Zervoudaki and Yiannis Giannakakis, accompanied by officials, as well as Cretan dance groups and traditional music artists, who will present live elements of the Cretan cultural heritage.
