Once Upon a Time I Reached America, or Once Upon a Time I Reached America, is the title of the documentary dedicated to George Katsaros – Theologitis, who was born in Amorgos in 1888 and was a living legend of Greek Folk Music in the United States for over 80 years.
In fact, the title of the documentary is identical to the title of one of his songs, which the iconic composer, lyricist, singer and instrumentalist recorded in Greece in 1988, at the age of 100.
It is noted that George Katsaros left for New York in 1913, with the guitar in his luggage, while for a long time he worked in various jobs, until he perfected his playing and joined the Salvation Army orchestra, where his extraordinary musical journey began.
In this direction, the municipality of Amorgos decided to approve the request of the Social Cooperative Enterprise Smiling Sketches for the municipality’s sponsorship for the filming on the island, in order to highlight the artist’s Amorgian origin.
According to the Deputy Mayor for Tourism Promotion and Social Welfare of the municipality, the fascinating documentary has also received the sponsorship of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the support of ERT, the Greek Film Center and EKOMED.
In particular, the film chronicles the extraordinary life of the artist, a master of the folk guitar and rebetiko music of the last century, as well as his successful career, from the island of Amorgos to gaining an emblematic position in the United States and throughout the world. Katsaros’ music served not only as a tribute to Greek traditions but also as a unifying force for immigrant communities, leaving a timeless legacy that resonates across generations.
Among other things, the documentary includes interviews with the artist’s relatives, people who knew him, filming at the Folklore Museum, and footage from all over Amorgos that will highlight the beauty of the island.
