World Tourism Day, established by the World Tourism Organization in 1970 and celebrated every year on September 27, is an international occasion to highlight the contribution of tourism to society, culture and the economy. In Greece, two of the most recognizable tourist destinations, Chania and Rhodes, are preparing special events to commemorate this year’s celebration.
“Super-Strata” in Chania
For the fourth consecutive year, the Municipality of Chania is planning “Super-Strata” on September 26, a music and dance event that has now become an institution. The event began in the summer of 2021 and is a vibrant way of expressing Cretan cultural heritage, combining music, dance and song.
This year’s event will feature all the Traditional Music and Dance Associations of Chania, which have contributed significantly to the formation of a strong cultural brand name for the city. The established route will start from Neorio Moros and end at Katehaki Square, where the celebration will culminate with an impressive collaboration of musicians and dancers. The event will conclude with the awarding of the Associations’ representatives, in recognition of their contribution to the preservation and promotion of tradition.
Cultural celebration in Rhodes
In Rhodes, the Municipality has chosen to focus on an artistic and highly aesthetic experience. The event is scheduled to take place on September 27 in front of the City Hall, with a concert by the ERT Contemporary Music Orchestra as its epicenter. Around forty musicians, under the direction of a conductor, will present a program that is expected to impress residents and visitors, giving Rhodes the glow of an international cultural event.
As part of the action, the work “Kavafika” by composer Antonis Kyzoulis will be presented, while the program will be enriched with artistic and cultural interventions that highlight the identity of the island. The organization has been entirely undertaken by the Tourism Directorate of the Municipality of Rhodes, with the aim of further strengthening the image of the island as a leading global destination.
A celebration with multiple messages
The events in Chania and Rhodes are not only a festive moment, but also a substantial reminder of the power of tourism to connect people and cultures. Through music, dance and art, the two destinations showcase the richness of their cultural heritage, underlining that tourism is not just an economic activity, but also a vehicle for cultural continuity and social cohesion.
