The Düsseldorf business newspaper Handelsblatt reports on the strong increase in tourism in Greece and notes: “Tourism in Greece is booming – and so is air travel. In 2024, the country recorded its second consecutive record with almost 40 million visitors. According to provisional estimates, the volume of traffic at the country’s airports in 2024 was 18% higher than in 2019 before the crisis. Athens Airport, Greece’s largest airport, reported an annual increase in passenger numbers of 13% for the first eleven months of 2024.
A German group is also benefiting from the rise in Greek air traffic: Fraport SA has been operating 14 regional airports in Greece since 2017. The portfolio includes the airport in Greece’s second-largest city, Thessaloniki, as well as island airports in tourist centers such as Rhodes, Mykonos, Kos, Santorini, and Corfu.”
The report continues with a comparison of what is happening in Germany: “While Fraport’s Frankfurt airport again recorded 14% fewer passengers in the first nine months of 2024 compared to 2019, new records were set in Greece. The number of passengers at Fraport’s airports in Greece increased by 6.4% between the beginning of January and the end of November. Tourism is an important pillar of the Greek economy. It accounts for around one-fifth of the Gross Domestic Product and employment. Greece is investing heavily in airport infrastructure to enable continued growth, and this is because capacity has been exhausted at many airports.
