Municipality of Athens: 10 separate parties for the biggest night of the year
The Municipality of Athens transforms the city these holidays into a fairytale setting, full of melodies, light, magic, and surprises. Open-air screenings and drive-in cinemas in the most beautiful parts of the city, concerts, musical events and performances in squares, streets, museums, theaters and cultural centers of the Municipality, as well as ten separate parties for the longest night of the whole year spread the pulse of Christmas.
Three days of atmospheric outdoor screenings
On Saturday, December 28, Wes Anderson’s beloved “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (“The Grand Budapest Hotel”, 2014) gives us an exciting drive-in experience, in collaboration with En Lefko 87.7, in the parking lot of the Municipal Theater of Lycabettus with a magical view of decorated Athens. On Sunday, December 29, at the outdoor area of Athens Book Space in Eleftheria Park, the tender Norwegian film “Christmas on Cobbler Street”, 2023, aimed at children from 10 years old, will be screened in collaboration with the Children’s and Adolescent International Film Festival of Athens and with the support of the Embassy of Norway.
The three-day festive film festival concludes on Monday, December 30, in Metropolis Square, with the classic Christmas romantic comedy “Love Actually”, 2003, in collaboration with the Greek streaming platform Cinobo.
The screenings take place with free admission, while the reservation process for the drive-in at Lycabettus will be announced soon on Culture Is Athens and En Lefko 87.7 channels.
The city celebrates the longest night of the year – December 21
On Saturday, December 21, Athens transforms into a live art and music scene, on the occasion of the biggest night of the year and the This is Athens – City Festival of the Municipality of Athens. On Protogenous Street, from 17:00 to midnight, an outdoor stage dedicated to the contemporary Greek alternative scene will be set up with DJ sets and happenings, and on Agios Andreas Square in Lambrini with representatives of the Greek electronic scene from ENTEKA Athens. In Gyzi Square, George Apergis and the Reverb Sessions are preparing a live party with electronic sounds, while in Fokionos Negri, the radio station Melodia 99.2 invites us to an artistic musical evening with its new live band and musical selections from the station’s favorite producers.
In Agios Panteleimonas Square, the music ensemble De Profundis presents works by leading composers of classical music, while on the Haritos pedestrian street in Kolonaki, Athens Voice revives its legendary street party. At the Syntagma metro station, Chores impresses with their polyphonic performance, while at the Dragatsani gallery, EnLefko 87.7 offers a unique DJ set with top DJs (Laternative, Eva Theotokatu and Giorgos Bakalakos). The evening continues with a piano recital in Ermou and culminates at the Olympia Municipal Music Theater “Maria Callas”, where Kosmos 93.6 presents Giorgis Christodoulou and a midnight party.
Music everywhere: Athens is filled with melodies!
Syntagma Square is the focus of this year’s Christmas events of the Municipality of Athens. From December 12 to 22, it will be flooded with sounds from Easy 97.2 radio station. The beginning of the festivities live on stage takes place on Tuesday, December 24 with Doros Demosthenos and his band. On Christmas Eve, on Wednesday, December 25, back-to-back artists will entertain the audience: In the morning, the Athenian Mandolin player Nikolaos Lavdas, at noon, the MΟb Trio with electronic jazz, and on the afternoon of Christmas, the subversive interpreter and performer, Panos Mouzourakis together with his band in an exhilarating musical show.
Special musical experiences in the city are offered by the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Municipality of Athens, from December 13 until the beginning of 2025 in parts of the city with Christmas tunes, and the van of the radio station Athens 9.84 which until December 21 will be parked by Syntagma and Ermou to Agios Panteleimon and Kypseli.
From Sunday, December 15, more music at the Maria Kallas Museum, the “Melina” Cultural Center of the Municipality of Athens, the Municipal Market of Kypseli, the Museum of Folk Art and Tradition “Aggeliki Hatzimichalis”, the Athens Book Space in Eleftheria Park and Olympia Municipal “Maria Callas” Musical Theater with the famous Viennese operetta by Johann Strauss of the youngest, “The Bat” (from December 19 to January 4), two “Rosarte of Musicals” concerts and the Athens Big Band, which meets two great international artists, Veronica Mortensen and Niels HP, in a brilliant evening with Christmas hues (December 30).
The morning of Thursday, December 26, is dedicated to the children with a musical performance from Zamominia, then the jazz band To Pragma, followed by Idra Kayne with soul and funk melodies and Mikro in their long-awaited and highly explosive comeback on stage.
The climax of the live musicians at Syntagma comes on New Year’s Eve, where we will welcome the new year with the musical and theatrical “time machine” of Phoebus Delivorias and his “Taratsa tou Chronos”, with the participation of Natassa Bofiliou, Thanasis Alevras, of Martha Frindzilas, a large orchestra, dancers and young voices, who present live music and a theatrical time machine that will run through the entire History of Athens from 1945 to 2025, through songs, dances, projections and humorous theatrical moments.
