Visitors to Greece should acquaint themselves with more destinations in the country, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said, as 2024 is set to close as another record year for tourism.
Speaking on Friday at the third Greece Talks conference, titled “Identity, Future and the Traveler,” Mitsotakis also underlined that Athens has become an all-year tourism destination.
In a conversation with the editor of Monocle magazine Andrew Tuck, Mitsotakis said that people visiting Greece must enjoy a unique and value-for-money experience that compels them to want to come back in order to discover new destinations.
He underscored the industry’s contribution to the economy, noting that tourist receipts exceeded 20 billion euros last year, while estimating that this figure will likely increase further this year.
The premier referred to Greek hospitality, saying that, in contrast to other destinations this summer, “there have been no incidents of local communities attacking tourists in Greece, and I don’t even expect such a thing to happen.”
The prime minister also stated that Greece has small businesses that can be very successful by offering quality tourism services. Greece’s natural heritage seems to be supporting new trends as people are looking for new and authentic experiences, he added.
New destinations in mainland Greece are already being promoted, he said, noting that the country has great winter destinations in addition to summer ones. He also referred to the vibrant Greek food and music scenes, and the country’s rich cultural heritage.
