Alright, let’s talk about something that’s been bugging mythology anime fans (and perhaps even the Greek gods themselves): the same old ‘gods are bad, demigods rise, humans rule now’ storyline. You’ve probably seen it in God of War, Percy Jackson, Clash of the Titans, and so on. And now, as Blood of Zeus, the hit Netflix anime series, is heading into its final season, the big question is: Are we doing this again?
Seriously, if Heron becomes king just ’cause he’s Zeus’ son, I mean, please? That’s like promoting someone to CEO just ’cause their father started the company. Haven’t we paid attention to all those Greek tragedies? Let’s get into it.
The ‘fall of the gods’ trope is so played out
You know the one. The gods are so self-absorbed, they mess everything up, and then some heroic half-god or mortal comes along and begins a new era. It’s totally epic the first few times. But now it’s like seeing the same season finale every time, but with different wigs.
Yes, the gods in Blood of Zeus have major issues: Zeus is the ultimate deadbeat dad (no surprise there), Hera went full revenge mode, and the rest of the gods are busy stabbing each other in the back. But does that automatically mean that we throw the entire divine set-up out the window and open it up for some mortals and demigods to run the show?
There’s a distinction between making the gods accountable and just passing on Olympus to the next fellow with pretty abs and daddy issues. So Heron is essentially the ‘blood of Zeus.’ That’s great. But you know what? Zeus has so many children that he can’t even keep most of their names straight.
If we crowned all of his children, Olympus would require a seating chart the size of Mount Othrys. In the previous season of Blood of Zeus, Heron’s arc so far has been solid. He’s had to deal with abandonment, an identity crisis, and saving the world while barely figuring out who he is.
But that doesn’t mean he should be the new King of the Gods. That isn’t character development, that’s just nepotism with a splash of extra lightning bolts. If anything, Blood of Zeus has been setting up Heron as a reluctant hero. Someone who steps up not because he wants power, but because he wants to protect people.
That’s so much cooler than watching him just sit on Zeus’ throne and pretend like he’s all-knowing. Alright, let’s be serious now. The other option, Seraphim, is probably the most complex, saddest character in the whole series. He’s a walking ‘Greek tragedy’ piece. But come on, a crown? No way. That guy needs therapy, not a throne.
And Alexia? Complete badass, brilliant warrior, fearless fighter, all-around legend. But her power comes from her humanity. She fights alongside the gods, not above them. Putting her in some new Olympus elite would just destroy her entire vibe.
What Blood of Zeus should really do instead?
Okay, this is where it might get exciting, in a good way. Rather than just killing off the old gods and plopping Heron and his team into it, what if the show completely avoids the whole ‘someone has to be in charge’ idea?

Why not reform the system rather than switch faces? What if Heron declines the throne and serves as a bridge between gods and mortals? What if Olympus becomes a council instead of a monarchy? What if they realize at last that perhaps no one, god, demigod, or man, should wield that kind of authority?
You know, revolutionary stuff. Real Greek drama with a modern twist. Greek mythology has survived for thousands of years not because it stayed the same, but because it evolved. The myths evolved along with the times. So why are so many modern myth retellings stuck in the same loop?

Blood of Zeus has a real chance here to flip the script. Rather than just another god-killer finale, it might offer us something a bit more intelligent, more thoughtful, and much less predictable. Let Heron become more than just another Zeus-in-training.
Let Alexia be the mortal who makes the gods better by just being herself. And let’s finally allow Seraphim to relax without being pulled into another tragic story of redemption. So all in all: Blood of Zeus Season 3 premieres May 8. Hope they don’t reuse the same old myth material. We’ve seen that show before. Let’s mix things up and do something legendary.
Blood of Zeus Session 3 will be available to watch on Netflix from May 8.
