A contestant on the Greek edition of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? came within a single breath of winning the grand prize of €300,000 ($327,000) this week.
In a tense finale, the player, Lefteris, faced the 15th and final question. Having already secured a staggering €90,000, he faced the ultimate gambler’s dilemma: risk it all for glory or walk away with a life-changing fortune.
The million-dollar (or €300,000) question
The final hurdle was a piece of Hollywood trivia. Host Grigoris Arnaoutoglou asked:
“Which of these Hollywood actors was actually born with the name Michael Douglas?”
A: Michael Caine
B: Michael J. Fox
C: Michael Fassbender
D: Michael Keaton
Lefteris agonized over the options. While he had a strong hunch, he wasn’t “100% sure.” Fearing a wrong answer would strip away his hard-earned €90,000, he made the safe call and decided to walk away.
However, the real drama unfolded after the decision was finalized. When Arnaoutoglou asked him which one he would have picked, Lefteris pointed to Michael Keaton. The studio went wild as the screen turned green—Keaton was the correct answer.
The host was visibly shaken by the “what if” moment, jokingly shouting, “CNN is going to play this clip!” as the audience realized Lefteris had the top prize in his head but lacked the nerve to lock it in.
For those playing along at home, the answer is a famous piece of industry lore. Michael Keaton was born Michael John Douglas. When he started his career, he discovered the Screen Actors Guild already had two famous members with his name: the legendary Michael Douglas (son of Kirk) and a popular broadcaster. To avoid confusion and meet union rules, he chose the stage name “Keaton.”
