The “Summer in Athens” festival returns to the Greek capital on June 21, celebrating Greece’s musical heritage and artistic creativity with 57 free events.
Organized by the Municipality of Athens, the annual festival will feature concerts blending Greek music with international sounds, along with dance performances, puppet shows, and theatrical events across 41 Athenian neighborhoods.
“From Kerameikos and Petralona, to Sepolia, Rizoupoli, Patisia, and Pagrati, every corner of Athens fills with light, sound, and life,” said Athens Mayor Haris Doukas.
Coinciding with European Music Day, the festival will open with two concerts: the Athens Big Band will take audiences on a journey from swing to modern jazz, while the Greek Music Workshop will present beloved melodies from classic Greek cinema.
Meanwhile, popular radio stations will bring the party vibe to Fokionos Negri Square in the morning and to Rizari Park in the afternoon.
The program’s highlights include:
– June 22 – Gadjo Dilo: Gypsy Jazz with a Greek Twist, Konistras Stadium, Petralona, 9pm: Beloved Greek songs take center stage, reimagined with gypsy jazz flair and ethnic rhythms.
– June 30 – Behind the Door, Koumoundourou Square, 8pm: A dance performance inspired by Southern Italy’s tarantism, exploring loss and transformation through the expressive movement of women.
– July 4 – The Dragon, the Princess, and a Jealous Fly, Papadiamantis Square, 8:30pm: A theatrical play designed to teach children about love, jealousy, and the beauty of diversity.
– July 11 – Another LAND by DANCE Athens, Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation, 9pm: Six dancers use movement and music to narrate personal and collective journeys, shaping a group in continuous transformation and pursuit of balance.
– July 18 – The Swings of Manolis Hiotis, Avdis Square, 9pm: Manolis Karantinis, Aspasia Stratigou, and Gerasimos Andreatos revive the repertoire of iconic Greek instrumentalist Manolis Hiotis, showcasing his biggest hits from the 1950s and 1960s.
– July 19 – Where is the Moon?, Penelope Delta Square, 8:30pm: A light-hearted performance designed to spark laughter and delight among young audiences.
The festival will conclude on July 21 with a concert by the Greek band Chainides at Santaroza Square, featuring a fusion of Greek folk and traditional music.
