“Stelios” Set for North American Release May 9 Following Greek Box Office Success

After achieving major box office success in Greece, Stelios, the biographical film chronicling the life of legendary Greek singer Stelios Kazantzidis, is set for its release across North American movie theaters on May 9.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Yorgos Tsemberopoulos and produced by Greek film and television studio Tanweer Productions, Stelios has been seen by over 920,000 in Greece and Cyprus, making it the fourth highest-grossing Greek film of all time.

Stelios follows Kazantzidis’ journey from Pontic refugee child to the cultural icon whose voice and music embodied the struggles of the Greek working class. Christos Mastoras, frontman of the pop group Melisses, has received acclaim for his portrayal of Kazantzidis.

“Stelios Kazantzidis is not just a musician—he is a voice of resilience, hope, and passion that has defined Greek culture for generations. This film is a tribute to his legacy, and we are thrilled to share it with audiences around the world,” said director Yorgos Tsemberopoulos.

“The overwhelming response in Greece proves the lasting impact of Stelios Kazantzidis’ music,” added producer Dionyssis Samiotis. “His voice spoke to the soul of the nation, and this film captures his incredible journey.”

The film is co-produced by Aegean Oil, Finos Film, Cosmote TV, the Hellenic Film and Audiovisual Center–Creative Greece, Stardust Effects, and Black Orange, with sponsorship from Custom Productions, DEI, the Greek National Tourism Organization, and the Hellenic Healthcare Group.

Firestorm Entertainment has secured North American distribution rights, with screenings confirmed in the U.S. and Canada. International releases are also underway or planned in the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Turkey, Australia, and Israel. Additional rollouts are expected in South Africa and parts of Central and Eastern Europe.
