The Souda Bay base has been placed on heightened alert and access to non-authorized personnel has been suspended following Iran’s threat to strike US installations in retaliation for attacks on its territory.
The Souda Bay base, near the city of Chania on the island of Crete, is used by the Greek Navy, US and other NATO forces. US military refers to it as Naval Support Activity (NSA) Souda Bay.
Anti-missile defense systems in the base have been boosted.
Greek Ministry of Defense sources said Saturday the military airfield is operating without disruption.
