Smile, Zorba, and More Will Be Part of J2 Spotlight Musical Theater Company’s 5th Anniversary Season Lineup
The Off-Broadway company will mount three mainstage productions in 2025.
The season will kick off with Smile, running April 10-20, 2025. The work is based on the 1975 screenplay by Jerry Belson, and features music by Marvin Hamlisch with lyrics and a book by Howard Ashman. Smile follows the optimistic hopefuls of the fictional 1985 Young American Miss beauty pageant in Santa Rosa, California.
Zorba will follow, with performances running April 24-May 4. Based on the film Zorba the Greek!, the production features music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and a book by Joseph Stein. Zorba tells the story of Zorba the Greek, a carefree vagabond, and his chosen friend, the unworldly Nikos, as they journey through the mountains of Crete.
The season will close with Drat! The Cat!, written by Ira Levin and Milton Schafer. Performances will run May 8-18. The story is set in turn-of-the-century New York, where a notorious cat burglar is targeting the richest families in town. When old Bulldog Purefoy, the sleuth on the case, dies, the Keystone Kops turn to his good-hearted but incompetent son, Bob.
Casting and creative teams for the season will be announced at a later date.
Along with the three mainstage productions, J2 Spotlight will also bring back its In-the-Spotlight Cabaret series. Details are to be announced.
