Significant Snowfall Blankets Greece’s Mountains

Greece’s mountainous regions have received significant snowfall in the final weeks of the year. As of December 28th, approximately 10 per cent of the country is covered in snow, according to the online weather service Meteo.

Since late November, successive waves of wintry weather have brought heavy rains and substantial snowfall to areas above 1,500 meters in altitude, the weather platform reported. Meteo also notes that the current snow coverage is slightly above the average for the period between 2004 and 2023.

While Athens and its surrounding areas, including Vari (south), Lavrio (southeast), and Rafina (east), are expected to experience fair weather at the start of 2025, winter conditions are forecast for other parts of the greater Athens region, such as Dionysos and Penteli to the north, as well as other areas throughout the country.
