Rialto Theatre welcomes 2025 | Cyprus Mail

Ten new productions in the first month of the year alone

The first month of the 2025 brings 10 new productions from Cyprus artists and beyond to the stage of Rialto Theatre in Limassol.

The first is a screening of Pedro Almodóvar’s latest film The Room Next Door. Taking place on Wednesday, the screening is an excellent opportunity to catch the renowned director’s debut English-language film that has already won three awards and been nominated for 25 more. It is based on Sigrid Nunez’s novel What Are You Going Through? and stars Tilda Swinton, Julianne Moore, John Turturro, Alessandro Nivola, Anh Duong and Sarah Demeestere. It will be shown in its original English with subtitles in Greek.

On Friday, acclaimed Greek singers Margarita Zorbala and Maria Papageorgiou will present their musical vision focused on the voice of women and female composers in music. In an evening titled Women in Creation, they will perform a carefully selected repertoire.

Shakespeare’s Richard II will follow on Saturday, presented by Theatro Dentro and Ypogaia. The play explores the boundaries of power, betrayal and the tragic fall of a king as directed by Leandros Taliotis. The play will be presented in Greek at 8pm.

Another local production will reach the stage of the Rialto Theatre this month, this one returning to Cyprus after global success. STILL! – A Statue That Travelled the World is an award-winning production, loved by young and old alike, both in Cyprus and abroad. Following performances as far away as China, the play returns to its homeland to charm Limassol audiences next Sunday with its universal, imaginary language. Its story is an ode to peace, friendship, diversity and the power of true love.

On January 15, THOC’s central stage will present Mateis Vișniec’s play, The Word Progress on my Mother’s Lips Doesn’t Ring True – a painfully topical tale about loss and mourning, rootlessness and the refugee experience. Though it will be performed in Greek, the performance will include English and Turkish surtitles.

The next event, on January 17, will return to music as the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra presents a family concert based on the renowned musical film The Sound of Music. Singer Aliki Chrysochou will both narrate the story and perform Richard Rodgers’ famous songs, including I Have Confidence; My Favourite Things; Do-Re-Mi and many more. Images from the film will be projected during the performance. The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of honorary conductor Alkis Baltas will accompany the singer with an exceptional orchestration by pianist Vicky Stylianou.

On the following evening, Tania Tsanaklidou, the Greek singer known for her soulful voice and emotional depth, will deliver a memory-evoking concert featuring some of the most cherished songs in the modern Greek repertoire.

The Liminal Theatre Company will then present Personne based on Confessions of a Mask by Yukio Mishima. The play takes audiences on an intimate journey of self-discovery triggered by sexual awakening against the backdrop of the final days of a losing war. This performance on January 21 (at 6.30pm and 8.30pm) will include English surtitles.

Evie Demetriou will present a new solo performance titled Never Just I on two occasions. First on January 24 and again on January 25. Through this performance, she explores identity through a playful and introspective lens. She draws inspiration from personal experiences to question social norms and the different roles that shape the concept of the self.

January’s final event at Rialto Theatre will host pianist Yiannis Georgiou in a special recital. The musician will present a night of extraordinary music including major works by Schumann, Brahms, and Rachmaninoff.
