Rialto Theatre January programme features Lanthimos film and Anna Vagena’s record-breaking play


Rialto Theatre opens 2025 with Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest film starring Emma Stone, a play that has run with the same lead actress for 25 years, and a renowned Georgian marionette theatre making a rare Cyprus appearance.

Film

Lanthimos’ Bugonia launches the programme on 7 January at 20:30. The Cypriot director’s latest features Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons as two conspiracy-obsessed men who kidnap a powerful CEO they believe is an alien plotting Earth’s destruction. Based on the Korean film Save the Green Planet!, the 120-minute thriller marks Lanthimos’ return after his Oscar success. Tickets €8.

Theatre

Anna Vagena brings her landmark production Angela to Rialto on 17 January at 20:30. First staged in 1999, the 90-minute play holds the record as the longest-running production with the same lead actress. Based on the memories of Angeliki Papazoglou – wife of rebetiko musician Vaggelis Papazoglou – the performance traces the life of an Asia Minor Greek woman. Directed by Lambros Liavas and Vagena, with Marianna Mavrianou as reader. Tickets €20/15.

The month’s theatre programme also includes Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie (9 January, 20:30), directed by Thanasis Georgiou for Theatro Dentro and Open Arts. The classic explores four lonely souls dreaming of different lives. Tickets €15.

Lexi Theatre stages Vasilis Katsikonouris’ Milk on 10 January at 20:30, directed by Marina Vronti. The acclaimed play examines the limits of love and sacrifice through captivating performances by Christina Pavlidou, Andreas Papamichalopoulos, Vassilis Charalambous and Stavriana Kadi. Tickets €25/22/18.

Joël Pommerat’s contemporary work The Reunification of the Two Koreas plays 28 January at 20:30, directed by Onisiforos Onisiforou for Theatro Dentro and Theatriki Stegi Kyprou. The play explores love, negotiation and the courage required to stand up for relationships. Tickets €18/15.

Marionettes and music

The Rezo Gabriadze Marionette Theatre – considered one of the world’s most renowned chamber theatres – performs Alfred and Violetta across five shows from 30 January through 1 February. Gabriadze reimagines Dumas’ The Lady of the Camellias and Verdi’s La Traviata in contemporary Tbilisi, creating a poetic world where marionettes experience real human emotions with humour, gentleness and wistful sadness. In Georgian with Greek and Russian subtitles. Shows: 30 Jan 19:00, 31 Jan 16:00 & 19:00, 1 Feb 16:00 & 19:00. Tickets €30+.

Kostas Hatzis and Daniela offer a musical evening on 24 January at 20:30, blending emotion, nostalgia and beloved Greek songs with traditional and ethnic elements woven into contemporary performance. Tickets €25/22.
