Renault’s 7 Seat Duster To Be Called ‘Boreal’

The video explaining the name Boreal has been shared on YouTube by Renault on their official global channel. In this short video, Sylvia Dos Santos, Head of Appellations Strategy, Renault Marketing Department, explains the origin of the name Boreal for the seven-seater version of the Duster C-segment SUV. She starts by mentioning that at Renault, the names of their vehicles are divided into three categories.

These categories are: Saga names, Icon names, and New names. The first category of Saga names includes the names of the cars which have been around for decades with the brand, like Clio, Megane, and others. Meanwhile, the Icon names include names which were introduced recently but have now become very famous, like Duster, Renault 5, and others.

As for the New names category, these are the names which are being used by the brand for the first time. The list of the new names of the brand includes: Austral, Rafale, Arkana, and Kardian, along with some more. She then adds that the name Boreal falls in the third category.

Santos, in the video, explains that the name Boreal has deep meaning and it is a word which exists in French. She adds that Boreal is derived from the word Boreas, which is also the name of the god of wind in Greek mythology. Additionally, it is also derived from the Latin word borealis, which means “North Wind.” The Head of Appellations Strategy also highlighted that it resonates with polar auroras we all know as Aurora Borealis.
