Rain holds out for summer celebration of Hellenism in Sydney

The threat of rain did not strike twice as Hellenism managed to run riot in Sydney’s Carss Park a month after the festival had to be postponed.

The Greek Summer Festival finally took place at Carss Park on Sunday (15 February) as the event, which was rescheduled after last month’s Epiphany event was washed out, turned the area into a site of Hellenic celebration.

Food and market stalls, carnival rides, and a list of dance groups and musical performances characterised the all-day event that began from 10am and finished well into the night at 9pm.

Among the entertainment was Greek singer Giannis Chatzopoulos, who came to the main stage at 3pm and sang numerous songs by iconic Greek singers, as accompanied by local musicians.

Bishop Christodoulos of Magnesia, who represented Archbishop Makarios at the event, spoke to Neos Kosmos on the joy they felt in finally holding the summertime celebration.

“It is a blessed day today. It is nice to see all the community come together underneath the Church, because this is a church event, and to feel Greek, to be proud Greeks, to eat and dance Greek,” he said.

“We are very blessed for this festival today and I would like to thank on behalf of his Eminence the committee, all the volunteers, the stalls that are here today and all the people that are here attending this event.”
