Prominent Greeks lost in 2025
Costas Simitis (1936–2025): The former Prime Minister (1996–2004) passed away in early January. He is remembered as the “architect” of Greece’s entry into the Eurozone and a pivotal figure in the country’s European integration. During his tenure, Simitis pushed for privatizations, fiscal stability and moderate foreign policies, aiming to modernize Greek economy and society, while Cyprus became a member of the European Union.
Archbishop Anastasios of Albania (1929–2025): A globally respected theologian and humanitarian who famously resurrected the Orthodox Church of Albania from the ashes of communism.
Dionysis Savvopoulos (1944–2025): The legendary singer-songwriter, often called the “Nionios” of the Greek people, whose music defined the transition to democracy and the spirit of several generations.
