The final farewell to Dionysis Savvopoulos, one of Greece’s most influential singer-songwriters, will take place today, Saturday, October 25, at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens. The artist, who passed away on Tuesday, October 22, at the age of 81, will be buried at the First Cemetery of Athens.
The funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m., followed by the burial ceremony. Eulogies will be delivered by artists, close friends, and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, honoring the legacy of a man whose music profoundly shaped Greek cultural life.
Family’s Wish
In accordance with the family’s wishes, instead of funeral wreaths, donations may be made to the Department of Music Studies at the Ionian University, where Savvopoulos once taught, and to the Department of Music Science and Art at the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki — his birthplace.
Traffic Restrictions for the Ceremony
Authorities have announced temporary traffic and parking restrictions in central Athens to facilitate the ceremony. From 6:00 a.m. until the end of the service, stopping, parking, and vehicle movement will be prohibited or gradually limited in the following streets:
- Mitropoleos Street, along its entire length
- Aiolou Street, between Adrianou and Ermou
- Ermou Street, between Aiolou and Athinas
- Anapafseos Street, along its full length and adjacent side streets up to the first parallel
- Trivonianou Street, between Karea and M. Mousourou
