LONDON, Ky. (WKYT) – One of Southern Kentucky’s largest festivals is about to get started.
As many as 100,000 people could come to London this weekend for the World Chicken Festival. There are four days of various events, including live entertainment, food, craft booths, and community togetherness.
This event last year was not cancelled due to the weather, but there were concerns because the remnants of Hurricane Helene were approaching. Tents were knocked over, and some vendors had to leave. And festival organizers say they are hoping for a much better weather event this coming weekend.
Right now, they believe from what they can see in the forecast, it looks like it’s going to be a lot better than what it was last year.
“So we lost about two and a half days of a four-day event. It was devastating not just for the festival but the nonprofits in the community that we actually help. Because at the heart of the chicken festival, it is a fundraiser,” said Travis Shortt, who helps organize the festival.
The forecast is welcome news to vendors setting up.
“I am very grateful. On Friday and Saturday, if we get good weather, it’s the two main days, we will be golden,” said Alexandro Karavasilis of Alex’s Greek Food, a vendor setting up on Main Street.
The festival lasts until Sunday. Organizers say this will be one of the first years the chicken skillet is open on Sunday; that has not been the case in years past.
Admission to the festival is free, but there is a cost for parking, food, carnival rides, and anything bought from vendors.
