Olympia Greek Taverna wants to tweak its liquor licence to allow for dancing, live music

A local Greek restaurant is looking for an endorsement on their liquor licence that would allow for dancing.

Earlier this week, City of Kelowna planners accepted an application from the owners of Olympia Greek Taverna seeking support for a Patron Participant Entertainment Endorsement.

According to the BC Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch (LCRB), that endorsement allows for things like dancing, karaoke, paint nights, open mic nights for comedy or singing.

The owners of Olympia say they have belly dancing on weekends and some patrons like to get up and join in, but their liquor licence does not currently allow for that.

Additionally, the owners would like to bring in live Greek music a few times a year to allow for dancing.

“We feel this is a great way for people to experience Greek culture and have an enjoyable time out,” the application said.

There are no proposed changes to the occupancy load or hours of operation.

This application has yet to be circulated around city hall but a report for council consideration can be expected in the near future.

Kelowna City Council will be asked to send a letter with either a positive or negative recommendation to the BC LCRB, which will have the final decision on the application.

Olympia Greek Taverna has been back in operation for a little over a year after suffering a devastating fire in October 2020.
