Olympia Greece is an ancient site and birthplace of the original Olympic Games. The ancient Olympic Games were held every four years from 776 BC to 393 AD and were considered a significant religious and athletic event, celebrating the God Zeus.
During the Olympic Games, a truce was observed between the different Greek city-states, which allowed participants safe travel to and from Olympia Greece. Only free men who spoke Greek from the different Greek city-states, were allowed to participate and they trained for ten months prior to the start of the games. The ancient Olympic Games included running, long jump, javelin, discus, shot put, boxing, wrestling, chariot races and pankration. Winners were awarded a wreath of olive leaves and a hero’s welcome back home.
The last ancient Olympic Games were held in 393 AD, after which the Christian Emperor Theodosius I, banned the games since they were dedicated to a pagan God. The site fell into ruins due to a series of earthquakes and floods which covered the site in soil twenty-six feet deep. In 1829 a French team identified and partially excavated the Temple of Zeus. In 1875, the first major excavation of Olympia began.
The Archaeological Museum of Olympia displays some of the world’s most important ancient works of art. First opened in 1888, the museum has a vast number of archaeological finds. The exhibits are displayed in chronological and thematic order from prehistoric to Roman times.
Olympia Greece is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to more than seventy buildings. Temples dedicated to the God Zeus and Hera, along with treasuries, baths, gymnasiums, and stadiums can all be found here.

Looks like those ancient ruins and their impressive architecture really take you back in time, sparking the imagination about how life once was. The details about their customs, like practicing without clothing, add a fascinating layer, and the museum interiors complete the experience beautifully. Excellent share.
