A new restaurant which moved from Kent to Birmingham has people travelling three hours for a taste of its Greek food.

Based in Hall Green, Pirouni is a new street food Greek eatery owned by Gina and Mike Andrianopoulou which opened at the end of March.

The husband and wife team moved from Greece to Kent nearly eight years ago and dreamed of opening their own restaurant.

They operated a street food van in Kent for a few years, but longed for a proper restaurant customers could sit down in.

And now, the dream has now become a reality, but not in the South East.

The couple realised it would be too expensive to open up in their former hometown, so decided to relocate to Birmingham.

And loyal customers of the past are making the 161 mile trip to dine with them.

Speaking to BirminghamLive, Gina said: “Kent is a very expensive area, and with our restaurant budget, it couldn’t accommodate us anymore.

“We found an opportunity to relocate in Birmingham and this came naturally because we have friends and family here.

“We decided to do the move and we’re very happy. Some of our previous regulars from Kent have already travelled to visit us.

“It was an amazing time seeing our Kent regulars here in Birmingham. It’s an honour for us to see that.”

Having opened at the end of March, Gina said Pirouni started off ‘quite slow’ but word of mouth is ‘beginning to spread’.

Chicken gyros (£8) was chosen by Gina as the ‘highlight’ of the menu with the option for pork gyros (£8) a close second.

Alternatively, Greek salad, baklava and skepasti include other tasty options from the Mediterranean country.

“We’re trying not to be other like Greek restaurants in terms of design. It’s okay to have Santorini on a wall but there are more places in Greece,” Gina added.

“It’s not just about selling food, we want people to feel welcome with a warm and relaxed atmosphere.

“We don’t want people coming here to eat just because it’s cheap.

“We want people to come, eat fresh food, and be looked after in a space which reflects the Greek spirit of hospitality.

“We’ve kept the tables wooden and not everything is white and blue, we want customers to feel like they’re entering a traditional Greek home.

“If you enter a Greek restaurant, you’re not going to go home hungry. Food is everything for us.”

Pirouni is located on 140a Priory Rd, Hall Green, B28 0TB
