Hey, hi. Hope your weekend plans include something sunny and at least one snack that doesn’t require cooking.
We’ve got a fun lineup this week: a behind-the-scenes look at entertainment producer Kyu Lee’s unexpected career path, a roundup of Seattle Mag staff pets, and the latest from our Trailblazing Women series. We’ll wrap their stories next week, so keep an eye out. And if you’re planning your summer weekends, don’t miss our guide to festivals worth adding to the calendar.
Alison Bechdel
Friday, May 30, 7:30 p.m.
Town Hall Seattle
$45+
Her new comic Spent is about a cartoonist spiraling in a goat sanctuary and trying to write a memoir that might save humanity. It’s sharp and self-lacerating, obviously. If Fun Home broke your heart and Are You My Mother? kept you up thinking about all your own complicated feelings about everything, you’ll want to be in the room for this.
Leon Bridges: The Leon Tour
May 30-31, 6:30 pm.
Remlinger Farms
$87.25+
Born in Atlanta and raised in Texas, Leon Bridges broke out with Coming Home and has been making slow-dance-in-the-kitchen music ever since. His songs are tender and sexy, and I’m always in the mood for this one. He’s playing two nights at Remlinger Farms, a fun and spacious outdoor venue. No one should ever miss the chance to see him.
Bite of Greece
May 30-June 1
Assumption Greek Orthodox Church
Free
There’s nothing complicated here, just very good food, live music, and a crowd happy to pretend it’s in Greece, drawn by the smell of grilled meat. The baklava sundaes taste exactly how you want them to.
Director’s Choice
May 30-June 8
McCaw Hall
$34+
It’s the last show of the season. The program features Twyla Tharp’s Nine Sinatra Songs, a celebrated piece set to Frank Sinatra’s music, known for its blend of ballroom and ballet styles. Accompanying this are two contemporary works: Rena Butler’s Cracks and Kiyon Ross’s …throes of increasing wonder, both exploring abstract emotional themes.
Puget Sound Bird Fest
May 31-June 1
Frances Anderson Center
Free and paid events
Everyone’s a secret bird person, right? Edmonds hosts two days of bird walks, ID tips, expert talks, and a photo contest. If you’ve ever tried to impress someone by mimicking a varied thrush, this one’s for you. Bring binoculars.
Pioneer Square Art Walk
June 5, 5 p.m.-10 p.m.
Pioneer Square
Free
You can go for the art, or you can go for the free wine and the satisfaction of walking around one of the greatest neighborhoods of all time, looking at art. Either way, First Thursday is still one of the easiest, most reliable things to do in Seattle. Just show up and follow the crowd.
