Mount Athos Tightens Pilgrim Access To Protect Monastic Life


Mount Athos, Greece—To preserve the tranquillity and prayer schedule of the monastic communities, the Holy Community of Mount Athos has announced stricter regulations for pilgrims seeking entry, effective January 1, 2025. The new measures address the growing number of visitors while prioritizing the spiritual life of the Holy Mountain.

Limited Capacity:

  • Conventual Sketes: A maximum of 200 pilgrims per month.
  • Central Churches of other Sketes: A maximum of 50 pilgrims per month.
  • Cells: A maximum of 20 pilgrims per month.

Prior Approval Required:

  • All pilgrims must obtain an official invitation from the Pilgrims’ Office by noon the day before arrival.
  • Groups exceeding five people are prohibited, except for students, young people, and military personnel.
  • Changing accommodation or visiting other monasteries without prior approval is strictly forbidden.

Temporary Flexibility for Major Holidays:

The Holy Community acknowledges the importance of pilgrimage during major holidays and may offer temporary accommodations with prior approval from the Pilgrims’ Office.

Early Application Encouraged:

To avoid overcrowding and ensure a smooth experience, pilgrims are strongly encouraged to submit their applications for approval by 12:00 p.m. at least one day before their visit.

The Holy Community of Mount Athos, the highest governing body on the Holy Mountain, comprises 20 representatives from the Athonite monasteries. Its purpose is to ensure the proper functioning and spiritual well-being of this historic centre of Orthodox monasticism.
