Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will attend Thursday morning’s ceremony for the arrival of Kimon, the first of four new French-made FDI frigates Greece has ordered amid a massive arms procurement drive to redress the balance of power with regional rival Turkey.
The PM’s office said Wednesday that Mitsotakis will participate in the event at sea, which will take place outside Greece’s main naval base at Salamis, just off Athens. The newly-built Kimon was formally handed over to the Greek navy on December 18, 2025, and has since been en route through the Mediterranean Sea.
The 122-meter ship is one of three frigates Greece agreed to buy from France’s Naval Group in 2021, at a cost of 3 billion euros. Last year, the country ordered a fourth frigate from the shipyard in Lorient. Greece is engaged in a multi-billion-euro program to modernise its military, including purchases of U.S.-made F-35 and French Rafale fighter jets.
