Mimis Domazos: His Body Lies in State for Public Viewing

The body of Mimis Domazos lies in state for public viewing at the chapel of the Athens Metropolitan Cathedral from the morning of Monday, January 27, and will remain there until 3:00 p.m., when the funeral service will be held. A large crowd is flocking to the chapel to bid farewell to the “General” of Panathinaikos, who passed away on Friday at the age of 83.

Earlier, the hearse carrying his body made a stop outside the stadium of his beloved team Panathinaikos, “Apostolos Nikolaidis”, and at that moment, the team’s anthem was heard over the loudspeakers, while the image of the “General” was displayed on the big screen.

His daughter Popi moved by the public emotional outpour stated “It is very difficult. My father is here. We thank everyone; all of Greece is mourning.”

Outside the stadium, there was a large photograph of Domazos, where many people had left flowers paying their respect to the legendary footballer. What stood out, though, was a T-shirt created by his grandson, Stamatis which wrote: “Eternally faithful, a lifelong Panathinaikos fan, Grandpa, I will love you forever.”

Next, Domazos’ body was transferred to the chapel of the Metropolitan Cathedral, at 9:00 am, with the coffin wrapped in the Panathinaikos flag.  By early morning, people had formed long lines to pay their respect and say their final farewell to the great “General” of the Greek football.

At the same time, dozens of wreaths have been placed around the Metropolitan Cathedral from sports organizations, other associations and friends. The funeral service will take place at 3:00 pm, and immediately after, he will be laid to rest at the First Cemetery of Athens.
