A film project is in the works that will bring the extraordinary life of Mikis Theodorakis to the big screen, according to an announcement from Greek production company Tanweer.
Tasked with the challenge of telling the story of one of the most towering figures in Greek music history, whose life was intertwined with some of the most pivotal moments in modern Greek history, is director Eva Nathena. The award-winning director is best known for “The Murderess,” based on the classic novel by Alexandros Papadiamantis.
Athens-based production company Tanweer has a successful track record in Greek music-themed biopics, including “Eftyhia,” about lyricist Eftyhia Papagiannopoulou, and “Yparcho,” which chronicled singer Stelios Kazantzidis’ rise to fame.
One of Greece’s most celebrated and influential composers, Theodorakis left behind a legacy that transcends the tens of thousands of musical compositions.
As a teen-ager Theodorakis witnessed the Nazi occupation of his country, leading to his first involvement in resistance— a commitment that would shape the rest of his life. He was imprisoned, tortured, and exiled multiple times during Greece’s political upheavals, yet his spirit remained unbroken. Even while in confinement, he composed music—writing symphonies, songs, and choral works that became anthems for freedom and resilience.
In the decades that followed, Theodorakis rose to international fame. His iconic score for Zorba the Greek introduced global audiences to the passion and pathos of Greek music.
