I’ve been making Melomakarona – Greek honey cookies, for as long as I can remember and I’ve finally perfected them. Make sure to use a great quality delicate extra virgin olive oil and Greek thyme honey for best results. FULL RECIPE BELOW.
RECIPE: MELOMAKARONA – GREEK HONEY COOKIES
Dough
1 cup Good quality fruity extra virgin olive oil olive oil (250 ml)
100 gm sugar ( 6 Tbsp)
90 ml orange juice (6 Tbsp)
25 ml brandy (2 Tbsp.)
390 gm pastry flour ( 3 cups )
120 gm fine semolina (3/4 cup )
1 tsp. baking powder (5 gm)
2 tsp. ground cloves (6 gm)
2 tsp. ground cinnamon (6 gm)
¼ tsp. Allspice ( 1 gm)
Nutmeg to taste
1/2 tsp. baking soda (2 gm)
Syrup
3/4 cup Greek amber honey (175 ml)
3/4 cup sugar (175 ml)
3/4 cup water (175 ml)
1 tsp. ground cinnamon (5 ml)
1 cup finely chopped walnuts, for garnish (250 ml), optional
* Additional Note about temperature of cookie . In video I said they were hot but I cooled them to warm before dipping them into the hot syrup. If they are too hot, they will fall apart.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
Whisk together the wet ingredients, with sugar and spices, in a medium bowl. Over a piece of parchment paper, sift flour, baking powder and baking soda 3 times.
Add the sifted dry ingredients to the oil mixture and stir with wooden spoon until mixture just holds together. Dough will not be fully smooth but should hold together. Note: texture of dough might vary depending on the protein level of your flour.
Pinch off about 1 1/2 tbsp. portions of dough (25- 27 gm ) and form into little flat oblongs (football shapes). Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet 2-inches apart. Bake in oven at 350 degrees convection F for 25- 30 minutes, or until evenly browned.
Syrup
Boil honey, sugar, water, and cinnamon for 8-10 minutes, until deep amber colour and slightly reduced. Remove from heat. While syrup is still hot, and cookies are warm but not HOT, using slotted spoon place cookies 6-8 at a time- into syrup for about 2-3 minutes, turning often to completely coat. Transfer to a large baking sheet or pan and arrange in a single layer. Sprinkle with chopped walnuts , if desired. Repeat with remaining cookies.
Makes about 36 delicious cookies( 25 gm each raw cookie dough )

Your method is excellent it you are not telling ingredients amount. Very disappointing
Fantastic recipe! Thank you
❤
Great recipe tnank you ❤
Can you make the syrup without sugar? The sugar makes them sickeningly sweet.
Thank you Christine for sharing your recipes. Are you Greek ? Have a merry Christmas and a wonderful new year. Hello from Sydney Australia
In your written recipe, you indicate that the ground walnuts for garnish "are oprional" – (for those with nut allergies aside -) they should not be eating these cookies 😮 The walnuts are the icing on the cake! This garnush is actually a major part of this recipe and should not be omitted. What a beautiful, delicious cookie. They remind me of Thia Maria from Athens ❤🌹❤️
Need the receip, my green t a ble doesn't show the ingredients 😢
Those are my all time favorite Greek sweets… LOVE EM!!!
Easter is this Sunday and I'm beyond excited to make these for the first time!!! Every time I ask my mom for her recipe, I never get a straight answer. It drives me crazy because I've wanted to make Melomakarona for the longest time. Now, I'm taking matters into my own hands! Kali Anastasi, Thank you so much for sharing <3
Hi, can i use peanut or sunflower oil in place of olive oil? I suffer IBS & do not tolerate olive oil unfortunately. Thanks.
Will be trying this recipe very soon!
Was looking for new cookie recipes, I'll make them soon. The way you describe them
sounds like they're great at home parties.
My grandmother used to make a German honey cookie but recipe was lost so thank you for this, sounds similiar
@1:54 the allspice looks like nutmeg, and you had already added allspice @1:40
Looking at the written recipe, I can see that you meant to say nutmeg! This looks like the best recipe I've seen for this cookie, and I can't wait to make it. I have to get some pastry flour first, but I have all of the other ingredients and have plenty of oranges in my back yard.
I live in greek fore 4 yers it was befor 36 yers ago i love your food and i make many sweet i love your chanal god + you
This is my mom’s favourite cookie. Yummy. I will help her make it.
The syrup has to be cold, NEVER drip hot cookie in hot syrup. No to cinnamon powder, sticks only,. Also you forgot to add cloves and orange to the syrup, this is the authentic Greek recipe!!
I have a question on the pastry flour measuring, 3 measured cups of my pastry flour is only 320 grams, I would need at least 4 cups to get to 450 grams as per your directions. Should I use3 cups or 450 grams?
how would these travel? I'd like to send them to relatives
😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤ "there 8s going to be some loosing it happening "
My Greek mother in law would love me to make this. I love your GREEK recipes.
Wow 🎉
I made last year great !! This year I’m making with real GREEK honey!! Also tsoureki and koulourakia!! I can’t wait!!!!!
These cookies are delicious!! always my favorities. Thanks for your videos
Where can I get your cookbook
Okay, I'll take a to go order of two dozen!
I really hate it to have to make remarks to such a lovely cook, but u left out one of the ESSENTIAL ingredients: ORANGE! Juice and Zest. Some also add some lemon zest to the Syrup too. Melomakarona is honey n orange flavour by default
Additionally, nutmeg is rarely added
My absolute favourite too. Sygnómi.. but you added ground cloves, allspice and cinnamon…then you grated a nut, which you called allspice (in English)?? Looks like nutmeg to me. You called it μοσχοκάρυδο (Nutmeg in Greek) OR am I wrong? I make mine like my grandmother did, withmore semolina than flour. I like them nutty 🙂
If traditional Greek yiayiades had a mallet like that in their kitchen, the koutala would be the least of one's fears..!
On another note, I just made these for the first time; they turned out perfectly and deliciously (and the house smells sooo good)! Thanks so much for sharing another great recipe, I've been learning a lot from your channel ❣
Where do you buy your olive oil? It looks very good
Thea, I tried making melomakarona twice from different recipes similar to yours but everytime the dough ends up too dry and it's not nice like yours. My cookies don't soak up the syrup well and don't crumble nice like they are supposed to. I will try your recipe, because I think my batter is too dry and I end up overworking it!
🇬🇷🏅💐🌾🕊️☕
Love the happy dance in the end. Making these for this Christmas ❤
Where are the measurements?
I do not recommend this recipe, to crumble completely fallen apart and I used exact amounts as given 👎🏻last year I used different ratios and was perfect what a waist of product
I'm sooo glad I've had those flavors dancing in my mouth because I made a batch of this amazing recipe! Thank you so much for sharing! Love your channel! Love your energy and the way you present a recipe which makes it easy to follow and succeed! You are fantastic! Please keep bringing more of these and oh I appreciate the greek words popping up : )

My favorite dessert in the world and then ice cream. In Greece it’s a Christmas tradition, that’s when you find them in the sweet shops but for our family it’s all year round treat. Making some today, got my ingredients ready and today I’m trying Christine’s recipe because we never used semolina and we also put finely chopped walnuts in the dough. Thanks Christine❤️. Now that my kids moved out on their own and want to make Greek food I tell them go to Christine’s videos, she’s a great chef and instructor. Kala Xristougenna ❤️✝️
Is there an advantage to dipping the hot cookies into hot syrup? I always thought one had to be cool, the other had to be hot. These are my fave Greek cookie and I'm planning to make these for Christmas for the first time!
I’m an experienced baker , and followed the recipe to the t but the fluid quantities are not correct! I added double the amount and the dough still needed more to come together. The result was dry cookie that didn’t absorb the syrup.
I made these tonight because someone asked me if I’d make him some. We never made these at home, they turned out just like my mother in laws. Hubby loves them.❤ you are a good teacher!
I married into a Greek family. I've made pastitsio and spanakopita a few times for our son who loves Greek food. I have ALS and want to leave him with the most traditional Greek recipes I can find on the Internet. I found your video baking with your mom. She's the real deal! (No disrespect to you.) I so appreciate watching you make these recipes and will pass on each to my son and granddaughter. Thank you!!!
Thanks Christina, I will make it tomorrow. Patsavura~~
I made these today and they are so good! Great texture and very aromatic. My only change from the recipe was I used extra light olive oil (was too scared to use regular extra virgin olive oil on cookies lol)
