The Maria Callas Museum, located in the heart of Athens, invites visitors to experience its newly enriched permanent exhibition this spring, marking its first significant update since opening a year ago.
The museum, operated by the Municipality of Athens, continues to honour the legacy of the 20th century’s legendary diva with fresh artifacts and captivating stories.
New Additions to the Collection
Three thematic sections of the permanent exhibition now feature unique items that illuminate different facets of Maria Callas’ life and career. Among the highlights are:
A striking red dress worn by Callas during the Paris premiere of L’homme de la Mancha, paired with an elegant music-themed fan, showcasing her impeccable style and deep connection to fashion.
Rare musical scores from her personal collection and an embroidered cover for her piano keys, reflecting her professionalism and dedication to her craft.
A wooden honorary key to the city of San Francisco, presented to her in 1958, symbolizing her global recognition and influence.
An iconic wig worn as Medea at Milan’s La Scala, a testament to her commanding stage presence and unforgettable operatic roles.
These artifacts, part of the museum’s permanent collection, were acquired from a 2000 Paris auction and generous donations by collectors, including the Hellenic Maria Callas Association and Konstantinos and Victoria Pylarinos.
A Revitalised Experience
The museum’s curatorial team has thoughtfully integrated these new exhibits to offer visitors a refreshed journey through Callas’ life. Authentic relics, rare narratives, and new connections to her personality create an immersive experience that celebrates her enduring legacy.
The museum welcomes both returning visitors and first-time guests to explore these new stories. Guided tours are available, offering deeper insights into the artifacts and their significance.
