Long Island School for the Gifted partnered with the restaurant It’s Greek to Me and owner, Kathy Barbalios, to create a meaningful learning experience for students.
The partnership began when Head of School Patricia Geyer attended a meeting at the restaurant as a member of the Syosset-Woodbury Chamber of Commerce. During the meeting, Barbalios shared her inspiring story as a Greek immigrant and restaurateur.
Geyer immediately invited Barbalios to speak with the fifth grade World Language class about her life, Greek culture, and traditions. Students came prepared with thoughtful questions about Greece and proudly shared what they had learned about the Greek alphabet, geography, and landmarks.
When art teacher Sheila Ambrosio showed Barbalios the students’ Greek-inspired artwork, an exciting idea was born: an art show at the restaurant.
In a weekend exhibit, It’s Greek to Me showcased student artwork for families and community members to enjoy while dining.

“Supporting local businesses is important to us, and experiential learning is a critical part of our curriculum,” said Geyer. “This partnership gave our students the opportunity to connect classroom learning with the real world in a meaningful and memorable way.”
The Long Island School for the Gifted (LISG) was established in 1980 as a private K-9 institution dedicated to meeting the unique educational and needs of gifted students. LISG provides an appropriate education for gifted children in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, in a nurturing environment where they will be both intellectually challenged and comfortable socially, thereby providing these children with the opportunity to grow and develop to their potential.
