Limassol’s annual carnival celebrations are set to reach their pinnacle this weekend, culminating in Sunday’s grand parade which represents the highlight of the city’s traditional festivities.
The Limassol Municipality has announced several programme adjustments, including relocating Saturday’s Kantadori singers event to Pattichion Municipal Theatre at 6:30 p.m., with free admission for all attendees.
Friday’s schedule features children’s choirs performing traditional serenades and carnival songs at the Pattichion Municipal Theatre starting at 7:00 p.m., with proceeds directed to the Limassol Municipality Social Grocery initiative. The day concludes with “Disco Carnival” at Lanitis Carob Mill from 9:00 p.m., offering a selection of Greek and international music.
Saturday presents a diverse array of cultural activities beginning at 10:00 a.m. with mask-making and handcrafted hat workshops at the “Panos Solomonides” Municipal Cultural Centre. Additional events include the musical narrative “The Crocodile at Limassol Carnival” at Pattichion Municipal Theatre at noon, followed by a traditional carnival celebration at Mario Tokas Square from 1:00 p.m.
The Limassol Classic Car Club and Cycling Club will conduct carnival routes through the city from 3:00 p.m., while Grigoris Afxentiou Square hosts the “Rumba Attack” event featuring traditional music from Cyprus, Greece and the Middle East at 4:00 p.m.
The grand carnival parade on Sunday, 2 March, represents the festival’s culmination, proceeding along Makarios III Avenue from 1:00 p.m. The procession begins at Agios Nikolaos junction and concludes at Polemidia traffic lights, featuring 127 participating groups and approximately 35,000 participants.
Leading the parade will be the Limassol Municipality Philharmonic, Cyprus Girl Guides Majorettes, Kantadori singers, Batukinio percussion group and Limassol Majorettes, all following the traditional “King of Confetti” figure.
Sunday’s festivities continue with a carnival event at Kolla Culture Factory from 4:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m., while the old port square hosts an outdoor carnival dance beginning at 9:00 p.m., including competitions for the three most creative mask designs.
