The Kytherian Association of Australia (KAA) marked its 103rd Anniversary with an elegant and joy-filled Debutante Ball on Saturday, May 17 at the Royal Randwick Racecourse Ballroom in Sydney, where tradition spectacularly met glamour.
Guests entered to find a dazzling installation of oversized pink and gold metallic spheres suspended above a white and pink personalised dancefloor, while gold candelabras and vibrant floral arrangements set the tone for a night to remember.
Australian Financial Review sports business journalist Zoe Samios served as Master of Ceremonies, welcoming official guests including President of the Kytherian Association Barbara Zantiotis; His Grace Bishop Iakovos of Miletoupolis, representing His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia; Matron of Honour Marina Venetoulis; Guest of Honour Ray Hadley OAM; and presidents of both the Kytherian Ladies Auxiliary and Youth Association, Melissa Miltiades and Anne-Marie Aroney.
The national anthems were performed by rising Kytherian singer-songwriter Alexis Panaretos and Australian Hellenic Choir founder James Tsolakis.
Wearing a bespoke fuchsia Hailey Mallos gown, Matron of Honour Marina Venetoulis gracefully led the presentation of 15 debutantes and their partners, along with four flower girls and four page boys. Venetoulis followed in the footsteps of her mother, Carol Mallos, who held the same role in 2005.
The debutantes and their partners captivated the audience with an impressive display of both Greek and Australian dances, thanks to the guidance of dance instructors Joanna Papoulis and Penelope Samios.
Guest of Honour Mr Hadley delivered a memorable speech, addressing the debutantes directly: “You’re the future, you’re the hope of the side.” He also recounted his enduring friendships with respected Kytherians such as Peter V’landys, Peter ‘Chippy’ Frilingos, Arthur Frilingos, Andrew Notaras and the late Bill Lynch.
In the spirit of philanthropy, the Kytherian Association made donations to two charities: the Manly Adolescent and Young Adult Hospice, and the Children’s Cancer Institute.
As formalities concluded, the celebration continued with live music by the Filoxenia Greek Band, which drew crowds to the dancefloor with its lively mix of bouzouki, saxophone, and percussion.
The Ball Committee expressed its gratitude for the overwhelming positive feedback received, calling it a privilege to organise and elevate the Association’s most historic annual event.
