Kivotos brings modern Greek dining to the Hellenic Club

The delicious food and warm hospitality Canberra has come to love from Kivotos in Braddon has now arrived at the Hellenic Club. The restaurant has opened a second venue, bringing its modern take on Mediterranean dining to one of the region’s most popular spaces.

For George Giannoulis, executive chef and owner of Kivotos, the move is about more than expansion; it is about community and connection

“The decision to open a second Kivotos was driven by a desire to extend the unique spirit of modern Greek hospitality that has made our Braddon venue so beloved,” says George.

“We were also inspired by the idea of creating two distinct yet complementary venues — each with its own atmosphere, layout, and personality, but united by our shared philosophy: warm hospitality, bold Mediterranean flavours, a celebration of Greek wines, and a commitment to innovation and quality.”

For George, the choice of location was especially meaningful, offering a chance to honour his strong cultural ties.

“The Hellenic Club holds deep cultural and emotional significance — not just for us as Greek-Australians, but for generations of the Canberra community. Choosing this location wasn’t just a business decision — it was a homecoming,” he explains.

This new chapter represents a complementary offering to the flagship Braddon restaurant, rather than a carbon copy.

“The new Kivotos at the Hellenic Club is not a replica — it’s a continuation of the story, written in a different tone,” says George.

“Braddon is where Kivotos was born — a boutique, wine-focused restaurant with a modern edge, known for its seasonal menus, curated Greek wine list, and intimate atmosphere.

“The Hellenic Club venue builds on that foundation, but with its own energy. It’s designed to be more accessible and welcoming to families, large groups, and events, with a menu that bridges traditional comfort and elevated flavours.

“Together, the two venues create a dynamic dual presence for Kivotos in Canberra: one focused on creative exploration and culinary storytelling, the other rooted in community, celebration, and tradition.”

The menu at the Hellenic Club embraces that communal spirit, with bold, classic flavours designed for sharing. Diners can expect comforting slow-braised lamb, charcoal-grilled steaks, rich stews, creamy tzatziki, oven-roasted favourites and vibrant village salads, alongside a handful of creative dishes that nod to the modern Kivotos philosophy.

“Both venues share the same DNA: quality ingredients, Greek soul, and a commitment to craft,” George says.

Of course, no Kivotos experience would be complete without wine. George’s business partner Anita has curated a list showcasing Greek varietals alongside spirits such as Mastiha and Metaxa, designed to transport diners straight to the Mediterranean.

The atmosphere, too, promises to capture the warmth and energy of Greek culture.

“The dining experience at the new Kivotos is warm, generous, and deeply connected to the heart of Greek culture,” George says.

“From the moment you walk in, you’re welcomed like family. The aromas of slow-roasted meats, freshly grilled seafood, and vibrant herbs fill the air. Tables are full of colour and life — mezze shared between friends, glasses of wine clinking, laughter echoing across generations.”

Beyond food and drink, the new venue will also host cultural celebrations. Live bouzouki nights, seasonal feasts, and Greek wine tastings are all planned to bring the space alive.

“These won’t be your standard restaurant promotions — they’re immersive, heartfelt gatherings that reflect the way Greeks celebrate life: with food, music, wine, and plenty of kefi,” says George.

For George, this second restaurant is both a tribute to tradition and an exciting step forward.

“This new chapter is both a homecoming and a stepping forward,” he reflects.

“It represents our commitment to honouring Greek tradition while continuing to evolve and grow. It’s about serving more people, more moments, more memories — without ever compromising on what made Kivotos special in the first place.”
