Singing, dancing, boundless enthusiasm, and a mountain of flowers set the scene for Kelly Kelekidou and Nikos Zoidakis’ two-day appearance at Kinisi at Trak in Melbourne last Friday and Saturday. The Greek community flooded the venue, once again its love for folk and traditional Greek music.
Their successful appearance in Melbourne was followed by another sold-out performance in Darwin, which is no coincidence, as Kelekidou lived there for four years (2014-2018) and maintains special ties with the local Greek community.
Kelekidou, a folk singer originally from Kokkinochoma, Kavala, and Chamilo, Kilkis, has left her mark on the Greek music scene with major hits such as “Glyka, glyka glykia mou” (Sweet, sweet, my sweet), “Ma to Theo” (By God), “Se vgazo akiro” (I’m canceling you), “Sygentrousou” (Focus), “M’ agapas, s’ agapo” (You love me, I love you) and many more that are still played on Greek radio stations.
Throughout her career, she has collaborated with well-known names in Greek music, such as Nikos Kourkoulis (her husband), Kostas Karafotis, Dionysis Makris, and Kostas Martakis.
Regarding her appearances in Melbourne, she said with emotion:
“Melbourne… your love knows no bounds. We’ve had magical nights with you. It’s a blessing to have you by my side wherever I am. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
At her side was Nikos Zoidakis who, since his maiden album in 1985, has participated in more than 20 albums and has made countless appearances in Greece and abroad, becoming one of the most recognisable exponents of contemporary Cretan music.’
