A 6.17-meter clearance on February 28 moved pole vaulter Emmanouil Karalis to second place on the men’s pole vault all-time list.
Greek pole vaulter Emmanouil Karalis has been named Men’s Athlete of the Month for February by European Athletics, the governing body for athletics in Europe, following a historic performance.
Karalis cleared 6.17 meters on February 28 at a domestic indoor meet in Paiania, near Athens, setting a new Greek national record for both indoor and outdoor competitions. Earlier the same day, he had already broken the national indoor record with a 6.07-meter jump.
The 6.17-meter clearance moved Karalis to second place on the men’s pole vault all-time list, surpassing former world-record holders Sergey Bubka and Renaud Lavillenie.
Only Sweden’s Armand Duplantis, the current world-record holder, remains ahead of the Greek athlete in the event’s all-time rankings.
