Kakavija: 10,000 Migrants Return to Greece After the End of the Holidays

At the start of 2026, heavy traffic is being recorded at the Kakavija Border Crossing Point, with a high volume of movement toward Greece as Albanian migrants return to the neighboring country after spending the year-end holidays with their relatives.

According to the Border Police, during the past 24 hours, 6,022 people and 2,049 vehicles traveled to Greece through the Kakavija customs checkpoint. The Kakavija Border Police operated with five service counters to process documents, avoiding long waiting lines.

“We have been waiting for about 10 minutes. We came to Albania for the holidays and had a wonderful time,” said one migrant.

“I’ve been waiting for around half an hour; I believe the line will move quickly and there won’t be delays,” added another citizen.

Today, Greek farmers are expected to reinstate road blockades on the Kakavija–Ioannina national road. According to the Greek side, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. (Greek time), the Kakavija–Ioannina road axis will be blocked at the Kallpaq village intersection due to a protest organized by farmers.
