Miranda Verouli Quintet Presents Sérgio Mendes
Verouli will be joined by her outstanding jazz quintet, she bringing to life the timeless spirit of Mendes’ music on Saturday, May 17 at 10:30 PM.
Sérgio Mendes, who passed away September 5, 2024, was a visionary pianist, composer, and producer whose six-decade career left an indelible mark on global music. From the iconic Brasil ’66 sound to Grammy wins and Oscar nods, his work bridged continents and generations.
Miranda Verouli Quintet will perform a handpicked selection of Mendes’ most beloved songs, honoring his signature style while weaving in fresh energy and storytelling.
Between songs, Miranda translates lyrics and shares the stories behind the music, painting a vivid picture of the cultural landscape that shaped Mendes’ artistry.
Mendes, born in Rio de Janeiro and classically trained, made his mark in the U.S. in the 1960s, collaborating with legends such as Cannonball Adderley, Herbie Mann, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, and Quincy Jones. He also played a crucial role in introducing Brazilian greats like Antônio Carlos Jobim, Milton Nascimento, and Jorge Ben Jor to international audiences.
Verouli’s deep connection with Brazilian music was recognized at the highest level in 2018, when she was awarded the Order of Rio Branco by Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for her role in promoting Brazilian culture in Greece.
The event is held under the auspices of the Embassy of Brazil in Greece.
Performers: Miranda Verouli on vocals, Tzortzis Tsiropoulos on tenor saxophone and guitar, Giorgos Tsolis on piano, Giorgos Roulos on double bass, and Giorgos Maniatis on drums.
Tickets are 10€, available online: https://shorturl.at/mGSfK.
