Jazz Meets the East: Panagiotis Andreou Returns to Athens

A vibrant fusion of jazz and Eastern musical traditions is set to light up Athens as Grammy-winning bassist Panagiotis Andreou joins forces with a hand-picked ensemble of standout musicians. The one-night event, “Panagiotis Andreou & Friends,” takes place on Monday, November 24, at 21:30, at Ilion Plus.

Born in Greece and now a creative force on New York’s music scene, Andreou has carved out a reputation as one of the most versatile and boundary-pushing bassists of his generation. His sound blends electronic jazz, Latin and Balkan rhythms, all filtered through his distinctive approach to both playing and singing.

His influences span a wide spectrum—from funk and timba to Konnakol (Indian scat), Balkan traditions and Greek folk music—creating a sonic identity that is uniquely his own.

Andreou was a founding member of the electrifying New York Gypsy, known for their regular appearances at Drom in New York and their dynamic touring schedule. His career has taken him to world-renowned venues and festivals, including Musikverein, St. Pölten Festspielhaus, the NY Gypsy Festival and the Pierre Boulez Saal.

He also performs, tours and records with the trailblazing electric-groove trio Now vs Now, alongside acclaimed drummer Mark Guiliana and keyboard virtuoso Jason Lindner.

In the Latin music sphere, Andreou’s collaborations include performances and recordings with Grammy-nominated Gonzalo Grau y La Clave Secreta, earning him the title of “Latin Bass Player of the Year” from Latin Jazz Corner.

His upcoming musical encounter with leading figures from Athens’ jazz and Eastern-music communities promises not only a captivating performance, but also a rare bridge between two rich and distinct musical worlds.
