Indie darlings Japanese Breakfast invited 90s icon Beck onstage during their show at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles tonight for a pair of songs. Frontwoman Michelle Zauner and Beck took turns duetting his song “The Golden Age” as well as the band’s own “Men In Bars” from their most recent album For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women) which arrived earlier this year.
Japanese Breakfast had previously joined Beck and Phoenix on their 2023 co-headlining tour along with other special guests Jenny Lewis, Weyes Blood and Sir Chloe.
Japanese Breakfast have kept busy this year from covering Gorillaz’s “On Melancholy Hill” and Donna Lewis’ “I Love You Always Forever” during their Coachella weekend one and two sets respectively to sharing new music. In April, the band shared the music video for “Winter In LA.” In May, they brought the previously mentioned Lewis out to perform “I Love You Always Forever” during their show in Brooklyn. In June, the group contributed a new song “My Baby (Got Nothing At All)” to the soundtrack of the Dakota Johnson-leading romcom Materialists. July saw the band teaming up with South Korean indie rockers Silica Gel for their collaboration “NamgungFEFERE.”
Beck, on the other hand, has revealed that he has an orchestral album in the works which should come as no surprise to diehard fans given his recent bout of orchestral shows this summer. In terms of collaborations, Beck also joined Cher and Phish’s Trey Anastasio for a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground” at Love Rocks NYC back in March.
