Danny Rohl could trigger a move for the AEK Athens defender and has asked Dan Purdy to check out his performances in Greece
Rangers are considering a move to resurrect their summer interest in former Hearts star James Penrice.
Ex-Ibrox caretaker gaffer Barry Ferguson thought he had a deal in place to bring the Jambos defender to Govan at the end of last season.
But the swoop fell through when Ferguson was overlooked for the Gers gig in favour of Russell Martin.
Now with Danny Rohl in charge of the Light Blues, Record Sport understands that Penrice’s name has again been placed high on the list of left-back options being weighed up ahead of the January window.
The 27-year-old did quit Tynecastle over the summer but instead ended up with Greek outfit AEK Athens.
He’s so far made 24 appearances for the Super League leaders since his £2million move from Gorgie but only 15 of them have been starts.
Rohl, though, remains a fan and has asked the club’s technical director Dan Purdy to check out his performances in Greece.
Gers are keen to beef up their options on the left hand side of their defence in the month having been forced to rely on 19-year-old Brentford loanee Jayden Meghoma for most of the campaign so far.
On-loan Marseille centre-half Derek Cornelius can also operate on the flank but he faces another six weeks out after being injured on international duty with Canada.
Purdy is now casting an eye over a number of different targets – with Penrice among them.
Belgian Under-21 left-back Tuur Rommens is also being assessed – but an official approach to his club side Westerlo, managed by former Ibrox coach Issame Cherai, has yet to be lodged.
But Rohl is keen to get fresh recruits in place as soon as possible – and hasn’t ruled out having new signings onboard the team bus as they head to Celtic Park for this Saturday’s crucial Old Firm showdown.
Speaking after Tuesday’s win over St Mirren – a result that has reignited Ibrox title hopes after slashing the gap on leaders Hearts to six points – he said: “We know the window is not easy, but we’re on the front foot. What it means at the end, let’s see.
“We cannot influence everything, but we are at the moment clear. We know that in some positions we have to wait for the right timing. I see that we are really convinced of what we want to do.”
