It’s In Queens! (April 4 to April 10)


In a clear sign of the times, the Easter Bunny visits Queens this week. Pete the Cat will be here, too. The rest is all human with a plethora of Jazz, Opera, Boom Boom, shoegazing, and locally grown herbs.

April 4, The Hunger & The Haunt, April 5. This event mixes an original theatrical song recital with a community resource fair. Abagael Cheng (soprano), Marie Lloyd Paspe (dancer), and Amber Scherer (piano) explore how Asian diaspora members connect to their heritages and find pathways to ancestral nourishment. Both shows start at 7 pm. Culture Lab LIC, 5-25 46th Ave.

April 4, Patricia Alcivar: Courage, 7 pm. Forest Hills resident Patricia “Boom Boom” Alcivar discusses her memoir “Courage.” Living alone since age 15, Alcivar overcame parental abuse to become a boxing champion and then a high-altitude mountain climber. April 4, Photos With Bunny, April 19. The Easter Bunny returns for photos and fun. Look for the beloved character next to The UPS Store every day, but with different schedules: April 4, 2 pm to 7 pm; Saturdays, 10 am to 9 pm; other days, 11 am to 7 pm. April 4, Shoegazer: Original Works, 6 pm. Opening reception for Paul Flinder’s solo exhibition of new works on paper and paintings. The show runs through the month of April. Astoria Arts Center, 27-02 Ditmars Blvd.

April 5, Brooklyn Folk Festival in Queens, 8 pm. Organized in partnership with the Jalopy Theatre & School of Music, this festival presents World Folk music, down-home tunes, cultural diversity, and rich musical traditions. Queens College, LeFrak Concert Hall, 153-49 Reeves Ave., Flushing.

April 5, Majors and Minors of Jazz, 7:30 pm. Youngsters (age 12 to 19) and oldsters (age 80 to 97) share the stage. The elders are Berth Hope (piano), Steve Little (drums), Keisha St. Joan (vocals), and Carol Sudhalter (saxophone) with special guest Houston Person (tenor saxophone). April 5, Immanuel Wilkins, 3 pm. Acclaimed saxophonist and composer Immanuel Wilkins presents the results of his residency at Louis Armstrong House Museum, a deep and personal exploration of Satchmo’s archival legacy. Louis Armstrong Center Jazz Room, 34-56 107th St., Corona.

April 5, Old Thyme Spices, 10 am. The Colonial Culinary Series continues with a workshop on how to prepare a meal with locally grown herbs and imported European spices that were precious commodities during the Colonial Era. April 5, Caribbean Artist Gregory Garcia, May 31. Garcia unveils his latest watercolors at 6 pm. His artwork captures the lush greenery of Trinidad and Tobago and the vibrant urban landscapes of New York City. 3636 Studio, 36-01 36th Ave., Astoria.

April 6, Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, 3 pm. New Jersey-based Verismo Opera puts on a full-scale, traditional Italian staging of Puccini’s beloved opera with beautiful sets and costumes, orchestra, chorus, and accomplished American soloists. April 6, Pete the Cat, 1 pm + 4 pm. Theaterworks USA presents a play about a groovy blue cat that meets the Biddles and gets the whole family rocking. That is, except for Jimmy, the most organized second grader on the planet. After some issues, Jimmy and Pete go on an adventure to Paris and back in a VW Bus. April 6, The Rich Tapestry of Greek Music, 3 pm. The Kostas Psarros Ensemble takes the audience on a journey through Greek music, introducing rhythms, melodies, and harmonies, while discussing the genre’s history. The Castle, Bayside Historical Society, 208 Totten Ave., Fort Totten.

April 6, Celebrating Prof. Edward Smaldone’s Retirement, 2 pm. A concert in honor of Edward Smaldone on his retirement from the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College after 35 years.
