After nearly two decades of inactivity, the Region of Ionian Islands has officially renewed its sister city partnership with Tai’an, China – a relationship that has linked Tai’an with Corfu since 2005.
This revitalized collaboration opens new opportunities to strengthen ties with one of the world’s fastest-growing tourism markets and to enhance cultural and economic exchanges.
“This renewed cooperation, backed by both the Region and the Municipality of Central Corfu, establishes a vital strategic channel with the Chinese market,” said Ionian Islands Governor Giannis Trepeklis.
“China represents a key emerging source of tourism with a profound appreciation for Greek culture and history. While regions like the South Aegean and destinations like Santorini, and Mykonos have already benefited, it is time for the Ionian Islands to do the same – with responsibility and vision.”
High level Chinese officials visit Corfu
The renewal was marked by a high-level meeting held on Monday, May 26, 2025, at the Region’s headquarters on Corfu. Governor Trepeklis welcomed a distinguished delegation from Tai’an, accompanied by Spyros Halikopoulos, Deputy Mayor for Tourism of the Municipality of Central Corfu and the Diapontia Islands.
The visiting delegation included senior officials from Tai’an’s Municipal Committee, Bureau of Commerce, Tourism and Culture Bureau, Taishan Regional Committee, Daiyue Regional Committee, and Department of Foreign Affairs and Interpretation, reflecting the breadth and seriousness of this renewed partnership.
Looking ahead, a larger delegation from Shandong Province, where Tai’an is located, is expected to visit around June 10 to further discuss long-term cooperation in tourism, education, and cultural initiatives.
Governor Trepeklis highlighted that the Ionian University is already laying the groundwork for academic exchanges, with strong regional support for initiatives from both local authorities and the academic community.
“The Chinese market represents the future. We must invest in it with purpose and consistency,” he added.
The meeting concluded with mutual recognition of its strategic importance, laying a solid foundation for a renewed and dynamic Greek-Chinese collaboration centered on the Ionian Islands.
