RockOverdose: First of all we would like to know your feelings on “Nocturnal Will” about a year and a half after its release. Would you change something if you could or is it exactly as you wanted it to be now that time passes after its release?

DÖDSRIT: Honestly, I feel every artist would in a way like to maybe change or adjust things to their albums as time passes. We noticed for example how sometimes we might play some songs slower or faster, or certain parts longer or shorter than on the recordings, but all with all, I’m still very proud and happy how the album turned out.

RockOverdose: To be really honest, at least in Greece, the album offered some pretty serious goosebumps to everyone and most people I admire their taste in music, had it on their best of list of 2024. I guess this is pretty much the case on other countries too. Did you expect this response and how does it feel go raise the expectations each time?

DÖDSRIT: I’m glad to hear so! The reaction and feedback we got on this release was over expectations. We got some amazing opportunities the same and following year, and I still can’t put into words how thankful we are for all of this. I can’t deny it’s always a challenge for artists to outdo themselves on their next release, but in the end that’s just how it goes. We’re currently slowly but steadily working on a follow-up for “Nocturnal Will”, so let’s see how that’s going to go.

RockOverdose: Sorry if the question seems obvious, as we had a 3 year gap between “Spirit Crusher”and “Mortal Coil”too, but did the pandemic play a part for another more 3 years for“Nocturnal Will”? Did it make the recording period any different both positively on negatively?

DÖDSRIT: I guess in a way it might have, as well as the fact that we can’t force creativity. The reason there was initially three years between “Spirit Crusher” and “Mortal Coil” is because when Dödsrit became a full-band, Christoffer and I decided to start writing the album together due to him liking certain ideas I had written. Funny enough, some earlier demo’s of the material from “Nocturnal Will” was already written around the time of “Mortal Coil”, of which I guess we might have kept a few riffs/ideas?? But I think the main reason why there were another three years between “Mortal Coil” and “Nocturnal Will” was also the fact that once everything opened up, we started touring quite intensively.. If I remember correctly, we even performed the two weekends before recording “Nocturnal Will” at Nordanpunk and at Brutal Assault, so as you can imagine, it was quite hectic as hell. But in any case, the recording session of “Nocturnal Will” was a tough one on an emotional level. I’m not sure if it was something positive or negative, but I guess some of that burden and grief can be felt back in the songs.

RockOverdose: Distance doesn’t seem to affect your inspiration when it is to release albums. Do you believe you would be more active or playing live more frequently if the gap between Netherlands and Sweden didn’t exist?

DÖDSRIT: It’s hard to say really, but I guess we would! Of course it’s undeniable that the distance doesn’t really make it any easier haha, but thankfully we’ve been doing this long enough now that we’ve been able to make this work.

RockOverdose: The band started as a one-person situation but eventually became a full unit, can we have an insight how this decision was taken and if it was something you saw it coming? Is this a reason why the performance on the last album raised the bar so hig, becoming to most your best album so far?

DÖDSRIT: To make a long story short: I guess Christoffer missed playing live, and since we were talking before about wanting to make music together, we thought it might be a good idea to play some shows under the name Dödsrit, and before we knew it, I started co-writing for the project. I feel like Christoffer and I have a very good understanding of eachother working together, which I feel is also what raised the bar for us musically. I’m not sure if I would say “Nocturnal Will” (or any of the other albums) is per say the “best one”, but it is definitely a strong album which I feel captured accurately where we were in life and as a band.

RockOverdose: Another key aspect of the band is the long songs. It seems to work great with you in each album. Could you see yourselves making an album with more songs inside the albums and shorter songs in the future? How does the song “speak”to you during each creation and how do you know it has to grow or stop growing on the other hand?

DÖDSRIT: Funny enough, we did talk about wanting to try making slightly shorter songs for a change, but in the end, all of this will show itself once the ideas manifest into actual songs. We don’t want to force something for the sake of changing, just like we don’t want to repeat ourselves just for the sake of playing it safe. All of this needs to make sense in the bigger picture of what we’re feeling so to speak. Anyways, it’s hard to say when we know when to “stop” while writing a song. Usually we try telling a story in a sense, where we flow from one riff into another one, which can go quite naturally, but at the same time is extremely hard.. I would say writing a good riff isn’t where the challenge is, but putting it all together.

RockOverdose: We have some recent changes in the band which we would like to know if it found you unprepared and you had to adapt quickly to a new reality, or if it doesn’t affect you that much as it can be a part of a band’s everyday life. Would you like to give us a hint of the latest situation?

DÖDSRIT: Yeah, these past two years have been pretty damn wild. On the positive note, we gained a third guitarist in the band that I feel has been the missing link we needed to bring the live performances to where we want them to be, especially since a lot of the material we write has three layers of guitars. And on a more recent note, we parted ways with our drummer Brendan after the US tour. It’s been very unfortunate, but we all think it’s for the best, and we hold no grudge against each other thankfully. But I guess we simply were looking into different directions on what we wanted in life, and also understand how touring can take quite a toll on one.. In any case, we’re adapting so to speak.. There’s no rest for the weary.

RockOverdose: Lyricwise, the passion of the vocals offer a deeper diving into the lyrics, I believe they suit very much, like never before and are one other factor of the album’s quality. What do you draw inspiration from mainly? We live in pretty fucked up times by all means, do you see a light at the end of the tunnel?

DÖDSRIT: I can’t really speak for Christoffer, but for me life in general has always been the main inspiration and drive to create music. It’s hard to say really if there is a light at the end of the tunnel. As of right now, I can’t deny that I feel like nothing really gets better, and that i’m stuck in a vicious circle of slowly digging my own grave so to speak. But, I try nonetheless to move forward as much as I can. Life owes us nothing, and in the end we should try to make the best out of it. In the end, it’s usually the small moments that make it worth pushing forward.

RockOverdose: After the two first albums in two different companies, the next two albums are released through Wolves Of Hades. How much important is to be able to control things a bit more with your releases? Has the success of the new album helped the company in overall too?

DÖDSRIT: It is of utmost importance for us to control our own music, hence why we basically “self-release” it, under my label. Dödsrit has indeed benefitted the growth of the label, and also helped me connect with some of the bands I work with very closely such as Lamp of Murmuur and Gudsforladt. So I’m extremely thankful for all of that.

RockOverdose: We’re seeing you in Greece finally for the first time, how would you describe your gigs to someone that has never seen you and what would you tell him to convince him showing up as your main advantage while playing live?

DÖDSRIT: Hahaha damn.. I have to admit I’m maybe not the best person in trying to sell my own music, but I guess if someone likes black metal played by punks, then that would be my selling point! Also, for what it’s worth, my father’s side of the family is Greek, so being able to finally perform in Athens is probably one of the most important moments for me personally. So I can only imagine that this show is going to be very memorable for everyone involved.

RockOverdose: Last but not least, we would like to thank you for your time. Before we end, we would like to know if there’s any new material in the works, which are your future plans -if there are any- and the merch you’ll bring with you as many people are wondering and would like to be prepared for obvious reasons. Take care and see you soon.

DÖDSRIT: No problem! We’re of course working on some new material, and hopefully this time it won’t take another 3 years before the next album hahaha! But we’ll see what time will bring.. We’re hoping to visit some new territories in 2026 with the band, and continue writing new songs during our time back home. Merchwise we will bring some shirts, longsleeves, records and of course other goods such as patches and pins! Take care & see you soon!
