I Tried 7 Brands Of Greek Yogurt & These Are The Best You Can Buy

  • I blindly tasted 7 different brands of Greek yogurt and skyr.
  • After tasting, I determined my favorites based on flavor, texture, and water content.
  • While most of the brands I tried were great, my top three were Siggi’s, Cabot, and Fage.

In this era of protein power, Greek yogurt’s popularity has skyrocketed—and the dairy aisle reflects it. New brands seem to be popping up every day, and the tried-and-true are joining the race to innovate and expand their offerings. But in the midst of all this, we have to ask: Which brands are the best?

I blindly sampled seven different nationally available brands of Greek yogurt and skyr. While skyr is technically different from Greek yogurt, I included it in this taste test since many people buy and use them interchangeably. And in an effort to keep everything as equal as possible, I made sure to sample the same flavor and fat percentage (plain, full-fat) for each brand.

After tasting all the samples, I determined my top three based on texture and flavor, as well as water content. The good news? Almost every single sample I tasted was pretty darn great; the Greek yogurt market is very strong. The bad news? I had to be absolutely cutthroat when choosing my top three, so several great yogurts didn’t even get honorable mention. That said, I made the hard calls, and here are the brands that were the best of the best:

#3. Siggi’s Skyr

Siggi’s was the lone skyr that made it into the top bracket, with a rich, creamy texture and a faint tang that was present without being too aggressive. As a snackable yogurt, it was pretty spot on. And while I would gladly eat it plain, I could also see it becoming a great base for a fruit and yogurt bowl or holding up well in a smoothie. The only potential negative? Its texture wasn’t quite as luscious as the next pick.

#2. Cabot

While I’m a huge fan of Cabot cheddar, I had never tried their Greek yogurt, but I was delighted to discover that it absolutely slaps. With an ultra silky, creamy texture that was almost pudding-like, this yogurt had a mild flavor with only a faint tang. Honestly, I would have loved it if it had a little more personality, but its knock-out texture more than made up for that. I could also see that milder flavor making it a perfect option for cooking and baking projects. Make no mistake, though: You’ll definitely want to eat this yogurt for breakfast. It’s luxury on a spoon.

#1. Fage

Fage is a staple in most grocery stores nationwide, so I shouldn’t have been surprised when this titan of the dairy aisle swept the competition. While my first visual impressions of this yogurt weren’t good—it appeared clumpy, almost like ricotta in the sample bowl, which definitely threw me off—those initial misgivings were completely reversed as soon as I tasted it. It was smooth and creamy (not at all gritty, the way it had appeared in the bowl), and it also had the perfect mild tang and a wonderful thickness and body that made it feel extra satisfying and super luxe. I would eat it any time of day, topped or just on its own. I guess some classics are just classics for a reason.
