Hull takeaway sharing the love with lone diners this Valentine’s Day

A Hull takeaway has taken to its heart the people who might not be in a loved-up relationship this Valentine’s Day.

One of the most popular meals served by The Greek At Home is its mixed grill for two. However, restaurateur Kye Ali has spared a thought for people who may be alone this coming February 14 – and thinks they deserve to be able to treat themselves just as much as couples who are celebrating.

Kye, of The Greek restaurants in Princes Avenue, Hull – it is due to reopen in the coming weeks after a full refurbishment – and at The Weir, Hessle, said: “We decided to celebrate ‘Singletines’ as well as Valentines with The Greek At Home, our takeaway in Newland Avenue.

“We usually do a mixed grill for two people, it’s a very popular dish. We thought this Valentine’s Day, no one should be left out, just because they are on their own.

“People who are not in a relationship might have nothing to do on Valentine’s Day. Why shouldn’t they enjoy a treat?”

The mixed grill typically includes lamb cutlets, chicken souvlaki, pork gyros, kefte souvlaki, village sausage, salad, dips, Greek pitta and chips. The sharing platter for two costs £52.

The Greek At Home, at 214 Newland Avenue, is serving its famous mixed grill but for one, complete with a dessert and a soft drink included in the £25 price. It will be available from Friday to Sunday, February 14 to 16, opening times being 4pm to 10pm on the Friday and noon to 10pm over the weekend.

The Greek At Home is a sister business to the award-winning, family-run restaurant business, The Greek. The first restaurant opened in Hull in 2017 and about a year later, expanded to Hessle.

When the pandemic hit, The Greek adapted by offering a home delivery service to keep sharing its food despite the challenges. It was so well-supported, The Greek was inspired to create The Greek At Home, a full-time takeaway option for customers.

At Christmas, The Greek, together with Roots Rum Shack and Kitchen, also in Newland Avenue, collaborated to serve free turkey dinners to the homeless on Christmas Day. They set up stall in Humber Street Christmas Market and opened for two hours to give away the meals and soft drinks to anyone who was struggling – no questions asked.
