PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — It’s an old song, and they’re going to sing it again right here as “Hadestown” comes to the Peoria Civic Center next week.
Nickolaus Colón, playing the role of Hades, in the touring musical presentation of “Hadestown,” visited with WMBD This Morning to talk about the excitement of the play and what makes it so endearing and enduring.
“He’s just a man. He may be a god, but the thing that drives him through this entire show is his wife, Persephone. He’s a man in love with a woman,” Colón said of the show will be at Prairie Home Alliance Theater at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 6 and 7.
“I think that’s the thing that makes him so relatable to people, is he’s just a man in love, even though he’s a little bit crazy with how he goes about it,” he said.
He also touted the music of the play, which has won a Grammy in its own right.
“You get a bit of everything. You get a little bit of rock, jazz, blues, R&B, a little soul. It’s one of those musical scores that you wouldn’t know it’s a musical, you could just listen to the album all day, that’s why it won the Grammy, it’s amazing,” he said.
Colón also gives his theory on why the story is so lasting.
“I think it’s why the Greek myths have stayed so long, they’re just so human. We all are capable of love, we all are capable of loss, of sadness, of anger. This show is a very human show,” he said.
“Hadestown” is presented by The American Theatre Guild. Tickets begin at $65 at BroadwayInPeoria.com, PeoriaCivicCenter.com and Ticketmaster.com. Tickets purchased through another source will not be guaranteed.
