CHICAGO – The Greek Women’s University Club (GWUC) announced that the deadline to apply for its 2025 Music Competition is March 30. The Competition is the only one of its kind in the United States for young people of Hellenic descent, ages 20-29, with musical talent.
The GWUC is dedicated to the promotion of the arts and education in our community. In keeping with these goals and to recognize excellence and encourage the achievements of young men and women of Greek heritage, the GWUC is sponsoring its 31st national music competition on Saturday, April 26.
To be eligible, applicants must be of Greek descent from 20 to 29 years of age.
Send applications accompanied by an audition recording or CD to Anna Moreno, 2074 W. Pratt Blvd. Chicago, IL 60645 no later than March 30, 2025. Applications may also be sent electronically. All applicants will be informed whether o not they have been selected as contestants. Audition CDs will be returned upon request.
Applicants must perform two selections with a total performance time of eight to ten minutes (cuts are permitted). Selections should be made from two different periods: (1) baroque or classical and (2) romantic or contemporary. A copy of the music performed must be furnished to the judges at the performance; it will be returned immediately. Selections on the CDs do not necessarily have to be the same as those played in the final performance and are not limited to ten minutes. Vocalists are not limited to two selections but must observe the time limit. Songs are to be sung in the original language: one must be in English and at least one must be in another language. Vocalists and instrumentalists must furnish any necessary accompanists. Original compositions must be recorded and submitted with score. Any composition winner will be selected before the competition date. A live presentation of the winning composition is required.
Contestants for the competition will be selected from among the applicants based on their performances on the audition CDs. The decision of the judges is final. Previous GWUC music competition winners are not eligible to compete in the same category.
The competition will be held at Alice Millar Chapel, Northwestern University, Evanston Campus, 1870 N. Sheridan Road in Evanston, Illinois, on April 1 at 11 AM. Individual scores and rating sheets will not be released. Again, the decision of the judges is final. The public will be invited to attend.
The award(s) of $1000 will be paid to the winner(s). Winner(s) must be present to accept award(s).
