Marinella, one of Greece’s most recognisable music artists, has died in Athens at the age of 87.
The singer, born Kyriaki Papadopoulou in Thessaloniki, had faced ongoing health complications since suffering a stroke in 2024. She collapsed during a live performance at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus and had not returned to the stage since.
Marinella’s career began in the 1950s and extended over several decades, during which she released numerous albums and performed widely in Greece and abroad. She was associated with major figures of Greek music and maintained a consistent presence in the country’s recording and live performance scene.
In 1974, she became the first artist to represent Greece at the Eurovision Song Contest, marking the country’s debut in the competition.
Her repertoire included popular, folk and laïko songs, and she remained active in live performance into her later years.
Following news of her death, statements were issued by government officials and cultural organisations acknowledging her contribution to Greek music. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.
