For the Meat Sauce
2 tbsp (30g) olive oil
2 medium onions (6oz – 180g) , chopped
2 cloves of garlic , minced
1/3 cup (70g) tomato paste
1 ⅔ pounds (750g) ground beef
1 can (14oz- 400g) tomato puree
1 tsp (5g) salt
1 tsp (5g) sugar
1/2 tsp (1g) ground black pepper
1/3 tsp (1g) cinnamon
bay leaves
For the Pasta
1 pound (500g) Greek pasta, Bucatini No.2
2 tbsp (30g) olive oil
1/4 cup (25g) Greek Kefalotyri or Parmesan cheese , grated
2 tbsp fresh parsley
For Bechamel Sauce
1/3 cup (80ml) olive oil
2/3 cup (80g) all-purpose flour
4 cups (1 liter) milk
1/2 tsp (1g) nutmeg
3/4 tsp (4g) salt
3 large eggs, beaten
For Topping
1/2 cup (50g) Greek Kefalotyri or Parmesan cheese

hello, i just made the recipe and struggled with the bechamel sauce. It was not getting as thick as yours. I used the same amount of ingredients as you did. Can someone please give me an advice? I am not good at cooking and started to learn because this is my husbands favourite dish ever. Efharisto 🙂
Amazing recipes !! I've recently discovered your channel and I must say congratulations for all you work! I will definately try your Pastitsio recipe ! And one suggestion is that you can also add crumbled feta cheece in addition with kefalotyri cheese.

you are the only foreign cook that I see who knows how to make pastitsio traditionally as we make it here in Greece. the one who showed you the recipe showed you almost all the secrets and that we make the béchamel with olive oil and not with butter. another secret is take some béchamel and mix it with the minced meat because it makes it creamier.
❤absolutely amazing… my husband wasn’t to sure he was going to like this when he looked at all the ingredients on the counter and watched as I was making it… he was really shocked about the sauce…. Then when we sat down for dinner … he said it was spectacular❣️❣️❣️ so this is a delicious Do-Over meal
Will make it your way and then try it my way: Using butter instead of olive oil and maybe balsamic vinegar to the onions and a bit of red wine and Worcester sauce to the meat for really special occasions.

Hi there! It's so nice seeing a pastitsio recipe in such a channel! Many respects! It looks very authentic! Coming from a few different areas of Greece and having eaten a lot of pastitsio I have a few suggestions to make if you want to try them.
1. Put 2/3 of the pasta on the bottom and the rest 1/3 in between the mince meat layer and the bechamel layer.
2. Add graviera as well in the ground cheese mix.
3. Use butter on the bechamel instead of olive oil and add cheese mix within the bechamel as well.
4. Make more bechamel (for 1.5 liters)
5. Add breadcrumbs on the top
Ps. I ve never eaten pastitsio with parsley in.

This was one of my favorite dishes growing up! I'm half Greek and half Japanese and I spent many summers in Greece visiting family and this was always on the table for dinners at least once.
Having worked in a Greek restaurant as a teen I can attest to the accuracy of this recipe. If you are not experienced in cooking take note of how this is made. Cooking the tomato paste for 2 minutes and cooking the bechamel long enough to thicken. On this channel recipes are executed with precision. Note that we used ground lamb which reeked when cooking. Think of it as lazy-lasagne. It is important (as done here) to make a BIG BECHAMEL, which means very thick. Kids love this and it really is as easy as shown. Don't hesitate to make it your own with a vegetarian tomato sauce made with roasted veggies. It also freezes well. Thank you #HomeCookingAdventure team for this relatively unknown yet popular Greek recipe.
